Mission Appropriate

by Ning Siy

This phrase is in contrast to “Mission Inappropriate’. This is a phrase I’ve learned recently from a fellow yogini. She told me that one’s purpose in a particular institution will cease to exist when the individual and the institution’s objectives no longer align.

Twenty years ago, I was introduced to Iyengar yoga when I had a chance to organize employee activities for a company I worked for. I did not embrace it right away. I just kept on attending the classes until it grew on me. Iyengar Yoga has taught me the following over the years:

1. Endure what initially seems to be unbearable. Holding a pose which is very uncomfortable made me deal with uncomfortable situations I’ve had to deal with at work and life in general.

2. Pay attention to detail. The instructions provided in classes are very detailed and made me become aware of muscles and body parts I had been clueless about. Developing observation and awareness has transcended to how I deal with people in general.

3. Become kinder to myself. I have good days and I have bad days. I noticed that even my management style at work has evolved since I no longer “keep up” with what a leader is supposed to be. I am more comfortable just being myself at work.

4. Fulfill my dharma. I truly believe that my dharma in life is to provide relief in whatever form and I am grateful that being able to teach in Sankalpa Yoga studio is one of the ways I can fulfill my dharma.

5. Connection with myself, other people and the universe. I have become much more in tune with my surroundings and open to receive whatever opportunities come my way.

As cliché as this sounds, there are truly no accidents. I became a substitute teacher for Sankalpa when the other teachers went away for further education. I realize what a blessing it is to have this opportunity. I believe I am where I am meant to be right now. At Sankalpa, I am mission appropriate.
